Functional screens create production variables.
Power, content playback, refresh behavior, brightness, cables and reflections all have to be managed. In some shots, those variables are necessary because the screen must actually display moving content. In other shots, the television is simply part of the set dressing.
A non-functional prop TV does not automatically eliminate every reflection or solve every camera problem. But in the right scene, it can remove several electronic variables and give the art department more control over the visual surface.
Why functional screens complicate some shots
A real television is designed to function, not to be invisible to a film crew.
Playback
Someone has to provide and control the content. The file, player, connection and timing all become part of the shot.
Refresh and flicker
Depending on the camera, frame rate and screen behavior, a live display can create visible flicker, rolling bands or exposure issues that require technical adjustment.
Brightness
A real screen emits light. That may be useful, but it can also affect exposure, nearby surfaces and the balance of the set lighting.
Reflections
Both functional and non-functional screens can reflect light. The degree depends on surface finish, lighting, camera angle and the surrounding environment.
Cables and power
A working screen needs power and possibly additional connections. Cable routing can become a set-dressing issue.
Unwanted content
Menus, notifications, connection errors or screen savers can appear at the wrong time if the device is not carefully controlled.
What non-functional prop TVs can solve
A prop TV removes active electronics from the display.
That can simplify:
- power planning for the prop itself;
- playback management;
- software or menu behavior;
- refresh-rate interaction;
- accidental screen changes;
- some cable-management requirements.
This makes it useful for static backgrounds, staged interiors, furniture scenes and shots where the screen does not need to behave like a real television.
What a prop TV cannot automatically solve
It is important not to overclaim.
Reflections still depend on the surface and lighting
A non-functional screen can still reflect studio lights, windows or other bright sources. A matte or anti-glare treatment may help on products that genuinely have that confirmed finish, but camera placement and lighting remain part of the solution.
It cannot display moving content
If the script requires animation, video, interface interaction or live screen changes, a real display or post-production solution may be necessary.
Close-up realism needs testing
A prop that works perfectly as a background object may not be appropriate for an extreme close-up. The art department should review the intended shot distance.
Physical installation still matters
Wall mounting, tabletop placement and set safety still need to be planned.
Choose the screen treatment for the shot
The screen should be treated as a set surface.
Questions to ask include:
- Is the TV in sharp focus or background focus?
- Does the screen need a specific still image?
- Will the screen be visible from multiple camera angles?
- Are there strong practical lights or windows opposite it?
- Is the television wall-mounted or placed on furniture?
- Does the shot require a recognizable brand environment or a neutral screen?
Where supported, custom or replaceable screen graphics can give the art department more control. But confirm that the selected product actually supports the requested artwork method.
When a real screen is still necessary
Use a functional display when:
- actors interact with the screen;
- moving content is part of the story;
- screen brightness is intentionally lighting the scene;
- the camera needs to capture real interface behavior;
- production prefers an on-set live image rather than post-production.
A professional set may use both real and prop screens in different areas. The decision should be shot-specific.
Build a set-dressing workflow
A simple workflow can prevent last-minute surprises.
Step 1 — Share the reference frame
Provide a storyboard, location photo or visual reference showing how the TV appears in the scene.
Step 2 — Confirm size
Select the screen size based on the set, furniture and camera framing. For example, compare a 65-Inch Prop TV with a 75-Inch Prop TV against the actual media wall.
Step 3 — Confirm screen treatment
Decide whether the screen is neutral, uses a still image or requires a specific graphic.
Step 4 — Confirm placement
Wall mount or tabletop? Is hardware required? Who installs it?

If possible, test the surface under the actual lighting setup or a close approximation.
Step 6 — Plan spares where the schedule justifies them
For critical shoots, the production team may decide to carry a spare or alternate size depending on project risk.
Production request checklist
When contacting a prop supplier, provide:
- shoot or installation date;
- delivery location;
- required TV size;
- quantity;
- wall-mounted or tabletop use;
- reference image;
- screen artwork requirement;
- approximate camera distance;
- whether the screen needs to be in close-up;
- return, reuse or one-way project plan if relevant.

For film and commercial work, “We need a 65-inch fake TV” does not provide enough information.
Send the reference frame, approximate size, placement and shoot date.
That lets the supplier evaluate whether a prop TV is appropriate for the shot, what screen treatment is realistic, and whether a functional display would actually be the better tool.
